2027:  Fixing Nigeria’s Electricity Problems, Not Oyo Guber Race, My Priority For Now — Adelabu * Minister Deflects Questions On Political Ambition

By Olumuyiwa Olumuyiwa

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Tuesday, parried questions about his governorship ambition in Oyo State in the next political dispensation that will begin in 2027.

While fielding questions at a press briefing in Abuja, Adelabu stated that he was preoccupied with how to find a lasting solution to the lingering electricity challenges besetting the country and fix the power sector.

Adelabu, however, made it clear that his commitment to the ministry under his watch did not foreclose the possibility of throwing his hat into the ring for the Oyo gubernatorial race adding that he still had few days to decide on his next political move.

.“What matters to me most now is this job that I am doing as the Honourable Minister of Power. I am excelling on the job, and that is my priority for now, tackling foreseen, known and unforeseen challenges in the power sector,” Adelabu said.

The minister added, “Resolving the power supply challenges is my priority for now. We have between now and March 31, if I am interested, in the gubernatorial contest in Oyo State. It is all about service, either at the national level or at the subnational level.

“I will not say more than that. Whether I will be here or I will be leaving is a matter of time. I will get back to you.”

The minister’s latest reaction on his next political move came on the heels of a presidential directive that all ministers, heads of agencies, and political appointees must resign on or before March 31 if they intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections.

The directive came exactly a week  ago and according to it the move is to ensure compliance with the electoral laws adding that this would safeguard the credibility of the political process and eventual outcomes of the exercise scheduled for early next year.

There are speculations in some quarters that Adelabu’s ambivalent position is due to  his inability to secure Tinubu’s support for his purported governorship ambition.

Peoplestemplate gathered from a high-ranking stakeholder in Oyo APC  that Tinubu’s anointed candidate for the  gubernatorial race is the law maker representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sharafadeen Alli.

According to our source who demanded anonymity as he was not authorized to release the information, Alli was “sold” to Tinubu  by the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, who is  a former occupier of the Oyo seat of power in Agodi.
