What We Learnt From Messi’s Visit To The White House

A deluge of reactions has been trailing the visit of Argentina’s football captain, Lionel Messi, to the United States of America’s seat of power which is popularly known as the White House. This is not unexpected considering Messi’s global appeal as a football icon and America’s place in international politics as one of the superpowers. The football wizard’s visit to the White House to meet its current occupier, Donald Trump, is not just symbolic but also historic. It’s a meeting that will be talked about for many generations to come.

Meanwhile, whatever the significance we read into the meeting, its primary purpose is not to cement either Trump’s or Messi’s place in history. This is because each of these persons’ place in the pantheon of the greats is assured. Messi’s unsurpassed achievements as a footballer has sealed his greatness while Trump, despite his controversial nature, has earned immortality by the virtue of his current position.

Messi was primarily at the White House as captain of the Inter Miami team that recently won the 2025 America’s Major League Soccer (MLS). He led the team to meet President Trump to celebrate the achievement with the America’s first citizen.

Here are the things observed from this well-publicised meeting.

1 There’s An Intersection Between Football And Politics

You’ll not be exaggerating if you say football is politics by another name. When we talk about football what readily comes to mind is pure and raw entertainment that puts spectators on the edges of their seats but there’s more to the round leather game than that. Beyond the razzledazzle that defines what is known as soccer in America, there are many striking similarities between these two activities that can’t be ignored. On and off the pitch, the overriding desire of a team is how to outsmart their rivals in a bid to achieve their goal which is victory. Teams come up with game plans and ensure they get it executed on the field of play. Politicians do the same thing, they strategize on how to thwart the opposition’s plans and put machinery in place to secure victory. Politicians talk tough during electioneering to weaken their opponents psychologically, footballers, particularly their managers, employ same tactic at media press conferences to dampen their rivals’ morale.

Politicians, like footballers, are interested in numbers. For the politicians the more the merrier while for footballers you must outscore your opponents to carry the day. No wonder both activities are seen as “game”. One is called a “dirty game” while the other is regarded as a “beautiful” game. Yet both games thrive on devious strategem meticulously hatched to outwit the opponents.

With this impression in mind, Is it not reasonable to say Trump may have extended invite to Messi and his Inter Miami teammates to boast its administration’s approval ratings? Who says the president won’t exploit the diminutive Argentine football genius’ presence in the White House? Do not forget that Messi may as well be the most popular sportsperson currently on the shores of America. He is something of a folk hero with a massive cult following.

2 The Symbolism Of Jersey No. 47

The jersey no. 47 presented to President Trump by one of the owners of the Inter Miami football club, Jorge Mas, holds significance. The import of the gesture may be lost on those who are not football enthusiasts but not on lovers of the beautiful game. The No. 47 speaks of Trump’s presidency in the America’s history. Messi is also the most decorated player wining 47 trophies in over two decades career spanning across Argentina, Barcelona in Spain, PSG in France and now the US. He broke a record last season in American football by becoming the first player in the history of the MLS to win the ‘ Most Valuable Player’ award in two successive seasons.

G.O.A.T Debate: Trump Gives Messi’s Fans Something To Cheer About

It’s no doubt that football has never witnessed a rivalry as intense, if not divisive, as the one between Messi and Ronaldo in its history. The debate over the better player between the two icons has even divided pundits into Messi/Ronaldo camps. Each camp comes up with metrics to support its favourite. When Messi won the 2022 edition of the World Cup in Qatar many had thought that incredible feat would settle the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) debate but it rather reignited it.

Speaking during Inter Miami team’s visit to the White House, President Donald Trump made a statement that might have inadvertently crowned Messi the GOAT in football.

Trump said, ” I shouldn’t say this because I’m old but I watched Pele play. I don’t know, you may be better than Pele. Pele was pretty good.” The American president paused and asked the audience: who’s a better player in history between Messi and Pele? The question to which the audience chorused, “Leo”.

Brazil’s football legend, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as “Pele” is now something of a mythical football figure having breathed his last in 2022. Pele’s name is often mentioned in the GOAT debate. Trump has definitely given Messi’s fan something to cheer about for omitting Ronaldo’s name and comparing Messi to Pele.
