Details As  UK Court Sentences 24-year-old  Nigerian To Life Imprisonment For Murder

A young Nigerian, identified as Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been ordered by Leicester Crown Court in the United Kingdom to go and spend the rest of his life in jail barring release on parole.

 

Ahanonu was convicted  on Tuesday after being found guilty by the court on Monday  for the murder of Nila Patel, a 56-year-old woman.

 

Patel was reported to have been attacked by Ahanonu on a street in Leicester, United Kingdom after causing commotion by driving under the influence of cannabis and eventually crashing his car.

 

According to a report by Leicestershire Police, Ahanonu who is


24-year-old  assaulted  Patel on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road.

 

The report added that the Nigerian had been driving recklessly around the city centre  with his car careening around flouting traffic regulations by  running red lights, swerving across lanes and causing panic to the pedestrians before a ghastly crash.

 

Patel, who was on her way from office, had just alighted from a bus. She was walking home when Ahanonu attacked her.

 

The report noted that the Nigerian could have likely embarked on a killing spree but for the intervention of security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary who restrained him until the arrival of the police.

 

However, Ahanonu’s  attack on Patel proved fatal as she had sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma before she was rescued The 56-year-old woman died two days later as a result of the injuries sustained prompting the re-arrest of Ahanonu on suspicion of murder on June 26, 2025.

 

Meanwhile, at the time of his arrest, officers  found out that Ahanonu had dealer bags of the cannabis valued at over £3,000 in his possession and three iPhones were recovered from his car. They also discovered he had been smoking cannabis while driving.

 

He had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a female police officer.

 

Speaking on the tragic development, lying Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Emma Matts, described the incident as “a horrific, violent and random attack” on an innocent woman.

 

“Ahanonu was unknown to the victim. She was simply walking home when she was subjected to this brutal assault,” Matts said, adding that CCTV footage of his driving before the crash was “frightening and disturbing.”
