I’ll Love To Take Iran’s Oil Despite Some “Stupid” Americans’ Stance — Trump
By Rotela Oguns
US President Donald Trump has declared that there’s more than meets the eye to his involvement and support of Israel in the war between the Middle East country and its neighbour.
Trump noted that his pressing goal as US president is to take the oil in Iran as the Islamic Republic remains defiant — and keeps launching counterattacks– in the face of relentless strikes from Israel and the US.
The US’ helmsman disclosed this in a Sunday interview he had with the Financial Times stressing that some of his country people who he described as “stupid” are questioning his motive for the war.
“To be honest with you, my favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran but some stupid people back in the US say: ‘why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people,” Trump said.
The US president also aired his opinion on the Kharg Island stressing that his intention is to seize Iran’s key fuel export hub.
“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump added.
“It would also mean we had to be there [in Kharg Island] for a while.”
The war in the Middle East, which has dragged on for a month, began when Israel with the support of the US jointly launched airstrikes against Iran killing his former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, some of his lieutenants and relatives.
Iran is a member of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). With about 208 million barrels as of 2024, it holds the world’s third largest proven crude oil reserves just after Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.
Two months earlier, in January, the US captured Nicolas Maduro, leader of Venezuela, another oil-rich nation.
The US also took over control of Venezuela’s oil industry.
Iran also control’s the Strait of Hormuz, a sea passage where about 20 percent of the world’s oil is shipped through.
Storage capacity on Kharg is estimated at roughly 30 million barrels, according to Kpler, a global trade analyst. The island handles 90 percent of Tehran’s oil exports.
