2027: Opposition’s Ranks Boosted As Kwankwaso Officially Dumps NNPP For ADC

By Akanni Toba

After days of speculation by pundits about what could likely be his next political move, former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso took the decision on Monday by formalizing his membership of the fledgling opposition party at Kwankwasiyya House in Kano, where he registered with the ADC  and received his membership card ahead of the 2027 elections.

He was welcomed to the ADC by a host of key members of the party including former Senate President, who is now the opposition party’s national chairman, David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal; Rotimi Amaechi; Peter Obi; Dino Melaye; and John Odigie-Oyegun.

Party stakeholders and supporters were also present at the venue located along Miller road in the Bompai area of Kano state

Kwankwaso had earlier resigned his membership of the NNPP.

While his relationship with the party lasted, Kwankwaso, who served as minister of defence, under President Olusegun Obasanjo, was considered as the face of the party.

Speaking after his official exit from the NNPP, the former Minister  expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve as its national leader and presidential candidate.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.

“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the party’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.”

With this development the ranks of the opposition party has been boosted considering Kwankwaso’s political status particularly in the North.

Kwankwaso, who is a former governor of Kano, is considered a folk hero. He has a  large cult following in the ancient city of Kano.
