Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obí, has stated that he could dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for another party ahead of the 2027 election if the process through which the party’s presidential standard bearer  lacks credibility.

Obi noted that his past defections were informed by his aversion to  transactional process adopted by key figures in his former  political parties while making significant decisions.

He maintained that what happens after the president primary in the ADC would largely depend on how the process was conduucted

He further emphasised the importance of due process in leadership emergence, warning against cutting corners.

Obi spoke on Naija Unfiltered podcast on Saturday.

He said, “I accept what happens after it if it’s through a transparent process you can call fair and credible. I’ve said it before I left parties because I found the whole process transactional.

“It’s critical that the process through which people come into office is far more fundamental than what they do after,”

“You cannot jump into the house through the window and start cleaning the house and expect everybody to accept you. The process must be right.” Obi added.

The former Anambra governor  also reacted to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar’s  recent remarks that the 2027 election will be his last shot at the presidency if he secures the ADC ticket.

He said, “At this point, we are not at that stage yet. Atiku is my respected leader and my dear elder brother. His statement, I will always say, is a statement of a leader, and look at what he used ‘if’.

“So we can’t say what will happen about tomorrow. I can only tell you I am contesting in the election for the office of the president.”

Obi has been criticized for easily dumping party whenever there’s is crisis instead of displaying his leadership skills by working with other members of the party in resolving the crisis.

The former Anambra governor dumped All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after his second tenure. He ran as Atiku’s running mate on the platform of the PDP in 2019.

He defected from the PDP to LP in 2022 when it became clear that he could not secure the PDP’s presidential ticket. Obi would later pursue his presidential ambition in the 2023 general elections on the platform of Labour Party.

The election was won by the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu, and Obi came third behind his erstwhile ally, Atiku Abubakar.

Obi would later leave the LP for ADC following the leadership crisis rocking the LP.

Meanwhile, this is the second time Obi will be hinting at possible defection from the ADC citing the same reason.
