Nobody Has Ordered Sanwo-Olu To Resign, Governor Is In Rude Health — Aide

By Akanni Toba

The Lagos state government has dismiss as fake news a report making the rounds that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state, has been “ordered to resign on health grounds”

The rebuttal came on the heels of a claim that President Bola Tinubu and a host of stakeholders in the state are “dissatisfied with the current leadership in Lagos and have moved to initiate a transition plan”.

But reacting to the report, Sanwo-Olu’s special adviser on media and publicity, Gboyega Akosile, in a statement on Monday, noted that nobody has asked the governor to resign and that his principal is in fine fettle.

Akosile described the report as “fake news” designed to mislead the public with “deliberate falsehoods”.

“This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign, this is another fake news,” the statement reads.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State.

“Earlier today, the Governor received Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who paid him a courtesy visit to formally notify him of his intention to contest for Governor.

“The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, as is customary.

“We are issuing this clarification to prevent the public from being misled by deliberate falsehoods. We would ordinarily ignore such baseless reports, but the need to reassure Lagosians makes this response necessary.”

Sanwo-Olu, who is one of the numerous lieutenants of Tinubu, assumed office as governor of Lagos State in 2019 succeeding Akinwunmi Ambode who served just one-term in office.

The Lagos helmsman’s tenure is expected to complete his eight-year tenure on May 29, 2027.

Recall that on Monday, Sanwo-Olu embraced and held up the hand of Obafemi Hamzat, his deputy in a symbolic gesture of endorsement as his preferred successor.

He was also lavish with praise for his deputy describing him as “the best man for the job”

The endorsement was made during a meeting with party leaders at the governor’s office in Alausa, Ikeja.
