Admit ‘ Monumental Governance Failure’ And Resign Like UK’s Starmer, Obi Tells Tinubu

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Bola Tinubu to call it quits as Nigeria’s helmsman over what he described as “monumental failure” of his administration.

Obi stressed that Tinubu would be well-advised to take a leaf from the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer’s book, who has announced his resignation.

He noted that Starmer’s action reflected political accountability adding that after listening to the Labour leader’s resignation speech he felt Tinubu would go himself a whole lot of good by making the same move as the British Prime Minister’s.

According to him, Nigerians are witnessing same situations at play in the UK as the Tinubu administration has failed to deliver on his campaign promises and the country is in the woods.

The former governor of Anambra said Nigeria’s current situation mirrors the criticisms Tinubu levelled against former President Goodluck Jonathan before the 2015 elections.

Obi recalled that Tinubu repeatedly called on Jonathan to resign over insecurity and economic hardship, including during the aftermath of the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.

“Before 2015, our President on several occasions championed the call for the then President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over economic hardship and insecurity affecting Nigerians,” Obi said in a post on X.

“During the Chibok school kidnapping incident, he demanded the immediate resignation of President Jonathan, arguing that the government had failed in its most fundamental duty of protecting lives.”

Obi also referenced promises Tinubu made during the 2023 election campaign, including commitments to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, and improve the welfare of Nigerians.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made several promises, including improved electricity supply. He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments,” he said.

Obi continued, “At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,”

“I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance. Such a gesture would help enthrone a political culture rooted in accountability and responsibility, rather than further entrenching impunity.”
