The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has called on Nigerians to be on their guards in their daily dealings with others, particularly those involving financial transactions.

CBN noted that there are cyber hack attempts to gain access to personal accounts of Nigerians.

While alerting the public to the method of operation of the potential hackers, CBN stated that there are fraudulent messages and emails falsely claiming to originate from the bank but actually from the cybercriminals.

The apex bank gave the warning in a statement signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, its acting director of corporate communications, on Tuesday.

The financial regulator made further clarifications on how the fraudulent activities are to be executed stressing that there are misleading messages designed to deceive Nigerians in circulation with the aim to making Nigerians to compromise their personal information.

The regulator said the fake communications, which include emails and online messages, often prompt recipients to click suspicious links while spreading false claims about the bank’s leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions.

CBN added that the fraudulent content is aimed at hacking personal accounts and misleading unsuspecting members of the public.

“The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng. Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites,” the statement reads.”

“Verify the authenticity of all CBN communications through the official website and recognised media outlets.

“Report any suspected fraudulent site, email, or message to law enforcement authorities.”

CBN also said it is committed to safeguarding the financial system.

The apex bank assured the public of strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect Nigerians from digital fraud.,
