Criticizing Electoral Act To Score Political Points “Great Disservice To Nigerians, Tinubu Tells Opposition
By Akanni Toba
President Bola Tinubu has told the opposition to stop criticizing the Electoral act as if it’s an imposition by his administration rather than a legislative instrument endorsed in accordance with the constitutional stipulations of the country.
Tinubu described the action of the opposition as a “great disservice” to Nigerians adding that the purpose is to score cheap political points ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The president spoke on Friday at the ongoing National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stressing that the law was subjected to rigorous legislative scrutiny by all members of the national assembly, including those elected on the platforms of opposition parties, before passage.
Tinubu stressed that the electoral act is part of his administration’s reforms which are targeted at strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.
“While we welcome criticism, the constant attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026 are a disservice to the Nigerian people,” the president said.
“It is public knowledge that the process leading to the amendment of the 2022 electoral law passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, including public hearing.
“The Electoral Act was passed by overwhelming majority of members of the national assembly elected by the Nigerian people in accordance with the 1999 constitution as amended.
“The Act reflects our collective crest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule.
“Therefore, our commitment is to uphold the rule of law, conduct credible elections, protect the integrity of our elections, and continue to be a stronger, secure, and united country.”
Recall that in February, Tinubu, as demanded by the constitution, signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law following what the president described as “solid brainstorming discussions by the national assembly.
