Lagos State Deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, may yet have another mountain to climb before actualizing his dream of flying the flag of the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 governorship race.
This is as another governorship aspirant in the APC, Samuel Ajose, kicked against Hamzat’s endorsement by the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, as the APC’s governoship consensus candidate, stressing that the move will “not stand”.
Ajose made his opposition to GAC’s adoption of Hamzat known while featuring in an interview by Arise News on Tuesday.
The governorship hopeful noted that the move by GAC was made as a strategy to force President Bola Tinubu to handpick Hamzat as his preferred standard bearer of the APC for the 2027 governorship election.
“I don’t think our president, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is giving in to what they are doing.
“What they are just trying to do is to coerce him into taking a decision, and I don’t think that decision will stand.”
Ajose made the remarks following the decision the endorsement of Hamzat by GAC which is regarded as the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The decision was reached during a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, indicating an early alignment within the ruling party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Speaking after the session, GAC leader, Tajudeen Olusi, said members unanimously agreed on Hamzat, expressing confidence in his ability to sustain and build on the state’s developmental progress.
Olusi explained that the meeting was convened to deliberate on the party’s forthcoming primaries and assess the governorship position ahead of the 2027 elections.
Prior to GAC’s meeting and subsequent endorsement of Hamzat, the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had, on Monday, embraced and raised his deputy’s hand as a symbolic gesture to announced him as his preferred successor come 2027 after the expiration of his second term of eight years.
