Why I Slept On Tesla Factory Floor For Three Years — Elon Musk

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and co-founder of Space X, Elon Musk, has revealed that he lived like a vagrant for the first three straight years at the incepient stage of Tesla, which is one of his companies, by bedding down on a couch in the factory.
Musk noted that there were days he even left the comforts of his room to spend some time in “a tent on the roof of the factory”.
The richest man in the world disclosed this during a recent interview adding that it was a deliberate lesson in exemplary leadership.
“I lived at Tesla’s factories in Fremont, California, and Nevada for three straight years. Those factories were effectively my home. I’m not exaggerating. I slept on a couch, spent some time in a tent on the roof, and for a period, I simply slept under my desk in the middle of the factory floor.
“I slept under my desk where everyone could see me during shift changes. That mattered. If employees believe their leader is somewhere else enjoying life, relaxing on a tropical island, it can be demoralizing. When the team saw me sleeping on the factory floor and working alongside them, they knew I was fully committed. That made a huge difference, and they responded by giving their absolute best.”
Musk later reinforced this leadership philosophy in a memo requiring Tesla employees to return to in-person work for a minimum of 40 hours per week:
He stressed that leadership is not only about giving instructions but also about being present, sharing sacrifices, and demonstrating commitment when the stakes are highest.
“The more senior your position, the more visible your presence should be. That’s why I spent so much time living in the factory—so the people on the production line could see me working alongside them. If I hadn’t done that, Tesla would likely have gone bankrupt long ago.” the billionaire added.
